Barros beats Kato and Rossi for provisional pole in Portugal

Alex Barros delivered an early blow to race favourites Daijiro Kato and Valentino Rossi, as he steered his NSR500 to provisional pole for the Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal. The Brazilian rider produced an excellent late lap to knock Kato off top spot at the chequered flag, with the Japanese rider having only just established his superiority in an openly contested session. Rossi was also a late arrival on the provisional front row, lapping 0.294 seconds slower than fellow RC211V rider Kato before running off track and missing out on the chance to make a pole attack, as was Loris Capirossi who qualified fourth.

Barros and Kato had both had spells at the top of the time sheets throughout the session, as did fellow Honda man Tohru Ukawa. With ten minutes remaining it was a Yamaha in control, as Carlos Checa briefly took the reigns, before the final Honda onslaught. Checa eventually slid down to fifth and is joined on the provisional second row by Ukawa, Max Biaggi and Sete Gibernau.
