Sebastian Porto sets new record for debut pole at Estoril

Sebastian Porto continued his great run of form at Estoril this afternoon, clocking the fastest ever lap of the Portuguese circuit by a quarter-litre machine and picking up the first pole position of his career. The Argentinean arrived in Portugal on the back of consecutive podium finishes and was in confident mood this afternoon, moving up to second place with 21 minutes remaining of the session whilst most other riders were carefully negotiating the cool circuit left damp by intermittent drizzle. Porto´s determination had seen him hit the deck earlier in the session but he recovered to set a new best lap of 1´41.708.

Fonsi Nieto saw a pole effort thwarted when he ran off-track, although he managed to qualify in third place behind Melandri, who improved his provisional pole time but was unable to match Porto in the final push. Roberto Rolfo crashed out towards the end of the session but his best time was enough for a place on the front row in fourth.

Franco Battaini qualified fifth ahead of Toni Elías, with Emilio Alzamora and Naoki Matsudo also making the second row.
