Fonsi Nieto wins under the rain despite mid-race crash

Fonsi Nieto took his third victory of the season in a race hampered by the rain, causing many riders to crash. Nieto himself crashed out of second place on the thirteenth lap, but managed to recover. Matsudo, who was leading the race, went out with five laps to go and left Nieto to take the lead ahead of Marco Melandri. The series leader reduced the gap over the final few laps but in the end second place was good enough for Melandri to conform with a 32 point lead over the Spaniard. Sebastian Porto took his third rostrum finish in succession.

Roby Rolfo was one of the protagonists of the Portuguese drama, as he recovered to take fourth despite a ten second stop & go penalty for a jump start. The Italian finished ahead of Locatelli, Alzamora, Haslam and Checa.

Battaini and Aoki challenged for a podium finish, but a crash and a technical failure put an end to their efforts. Jay Vincent´s fine ride was also ruined by a crash when he was lapping in third.
