Youichi Ui to join the 100 club in Rio

Youichi Ui will this weekend join the exclusive 100 club as he clocks up a century of Grand Prix starts in Rio. The honour arrives at a low time for the Japanese veteran, who currently lies in eleventh place in the 125cc World Championship standings with only one podium finish to his credit this season. Ui now returns to the scene of his last victory, having missed out on the title here despite his brave efforts one year ago .

The Caja Madrid Derbi Racing rider made his competitive debut in 1995, when he rode a Yamaha as a wildcard at his home Grand Prix. In 1996 he completed his first full World Championship season in the Yamaha Kurz team, with whom he stayed for two further seasons and shared the glory of his first podium finishes. In 1999 he signed for the Derbi squad on their return to racing and picked up a podium finish in their first season together. He finished as the 125cc category runner-up with Derbi in 2000 and 2001, clocking up eleven victories.
