Carlos Checa heads for Rio with victory on his mind

Carlos Checa heads for the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix this weekend hoping to bury the memory of one year ago when he missed out on victory to Valentino Rossi on aggregate times despite leading for almost the whole of the restarted wet race. ´What happened a year ago at Jacarepagua was a shame and I was quite frustrated because I got held up on the last corner. Also, because the race was run in two parts, finishing ahead of Rossi but not winning the race was a strange sensation. In any case I don´t want to think about it too much because there is no point´.

Checa believes that the circuit which will on Saturday play host to the twelfth round of the 2002 MotoGP World Championship could suit him: ´For a start it is a circuit which favours the characteristics of the Yamaha and which could benefit us with the long straight. The only problem could be with grip, but this will affect all the riders the same and it will be a case of working hard to find the best possible solution´.

The Marlboro Yamaha man currently lies fourth in the series, 28 points behind his team-mate Max Biaggi, but insists he is not thinking about that at the moment: ´The overall classification bothers me, of course it does, but at the moment it is not my objective. What I want is to win at least one race before the end of the season. If I achieve it then my position in the standings will improve, but I am just taking the races one by one´.

Carlos Checa is satisfied with the development of the M1 this season and with the work the team have put in: ´Since Estoril we have consolidated the set-up of the bike using the new material we received in Brno. I think that we have done a good job, the bike is at a good stage of its evolution and is the product of hard work conducted throughout the season´.
