Whilst the finishing touches were being put to preparations for the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix, some of the weekend's main protagonists took the opportunity to take a break from the hustle and bustle and head for Corcovado, the famous statue of Jesus Christ which overlooks the impressive Rio skyline. MotoGP stars Max Biaggi, Garry McCoy and Shinya Nakano were joined by 250cc series leader Marco Melandri and 125cc title rivals Arnaud Vincent and Manuel Poggiali.

For Melandri it came as a welcome break from the intense mental focus of consolidating his 32-point championship lead over Fonsi Nieto, whilst for Vincent and Poggiali it was the first encounter of what promises to be another highly confrontational weekend. The Frenchman leads the World Champion, who clinched his title at this circuit last year, by 23 points after victory in the Estoril rain two weeks ago.
