Biaggi puts the Yamaha M1 on provisional pole in Rio

Amid the flurry of press interest surrounding his MotoGP future, Max Biaggi concentrated at the job at hand today and put his Yamaha M1 machine on provisional pole position for the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix. The Italian, who has just signed a three year deal with Pramac to ride an RC211V, held off the current master of the four stroke Honda, Valentino Rossi, by 0.012 seconds. Biaggi, who can delay Rossi´s championship celebrations this weekend by picking up two points more than his rival, was joined on the provisional front row by his team-mate Carlos Checa and local hero Alex Barros. Biaggi rose to the top of the time sheets after just five minutes of this afternoon´s session, interchanging places with Rossi before setting what turned out to be his pole lap with 31 minutes still remaining. Rossi remained unchallenged in second place as a group of riders swapped positions behind him. Checa recovered from a crash early in the session to post his front row lap ahead of Barros, who consistently improved to finally lap within 0.144 seconds of Biaggi in fourth place.

Norick Abe heads the second row ahead of Olivier Jacque, Nobuatsu Aoki and Shinya Nakano. Tohru Ukawa, the only rider other than Biaggi who can prevent a Rossi party in Rio on Saturday night, was eleventh quickest.
