Elías steals the show with provisional pole in Rio

Toni Elías outshone title contenders Marco Melandri and Fonsi Nieto with a dazzling display to set pole provisional pole position for the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix. Elias just edged Melandri out of top spot with a last lap attack, to head the grid, albeit provisionally, for the first time in his 250 rookie season.

Nieto qualified in third place despite a session which was severely interrupted by technical problems and is joined on the provisional front row by Sebastián Porto. The Argentinean had made a great start to the session but was forced to return to the pits and could only manage a total of eleven laps.

The Yamaha of Porto interrupts an otherwise dominating display by Aprilia, with Randy De Puniet, Roberto Locatelli, Alex Debón and Franco Battaini all qualifying on the second row. Official Honda pair Emilio Alzamora and Roby Rolfo are in ninth and tenth place respectively, whilst Casey Stoner crashed out at the end of the session and could only qualify eleventh.
