Poggiali and Vincent head provisional grid

Manuel Poggiali and Arnaud Vincent resumed their rivalry at the head of the 125 field today, setting the quickest times in the first qualifying session for the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix at the Nelson Piquet circuit. The reigning World Champion took provisional pole position after ousting Vincent from the top of the time sheets after ten minutes and then dominating for the remainder of the session.

The Gilera continually improved his lap times and was 0.7 seconds quicker than his Aprilia rival with 10 minutes remaining, but the Frenchman reduced the gap to just one tenth in the final stages. Pablo Nieto also posted a late lap to take third place, and was joined on the provisional front row by the rapidly improving Hungarian Gabor Talmacsi in fourth.

Talmacsi, who posted his best time as the chequered flag was waved, relegated title challenger Daniel Pedrosa to the second row in fifth place, just ahead of Finnish youngster Mika Kallio, consistent German Steve Jenkner and Japanese veteran Noboru Ueda, who continues his recuperation after a long lay off through injury.
