Biaggi takes third pole of year as McWilliams springs Rio surprise

Max Biaggi took his third pole position of the season with a circuit best lap at Rio this afternoon, but his performance was eclipsed by that of Ulsterman Jeremy McWilliams, who became the fastest ever two stroke rider around this track with an awe-inspiring effort aboard the Proton KR3. Despite the huge power disadvantage down the long straights here at the Autodromo Nelson Piquet, McWilliams contested pole position with four-stroke riders Biaggi and Valentino Rossi, but had to eventually to settle for third place on the grid after being outdone by the Italian pair. Garry McCoy was in equally impressive form and could have taken pole himself, but the Australian could only manage fourth place after being held up by Abe on a fast lap.

Biaggi dominated much of the session alongside team-mate Carlos Checa, but mechanical problems forced the Spaniard to pit as the session reached its climax and he was unable to hang on to a front row spot as Rossi, McWilliams and McCoy dramatically increased the pace. Checa will tomorrow head a second row which also features Daijiro Kato, Olivier Jacque and Jurgen vd. Goorbergh.
