Debut pole for De Puniet in Brazil

Randy de Puniet took a surprise debut pole in the final qualifying session for the 250 class in Rio this afternoon. In a session dominated by Toni Elías, it was Sebastián Porto who looked like finally clinching pole after dislodging the Spaniard, until a late, late effort by the Frenchman relegated the Argentinean to second and Elias down to third.

De Puniet edged out Porto by 0.020 seconds to head an incredibly close front row, with the pole setter separated by just 0.031 seconds from Marco Melandri in fourth place. Fonsi Nieto was just 0.031 seconds slower than the Italian but has to settle for a second row start alongside Roberto Locatelli, Naoki Matsudo and Alex Debón.
