Sebastian Porto earns first career victory in Rio

Sebastian Porto took his maiden victory in the rain at Rio today, Yamaha´s first 250 win since the 2000 Australian GP with Olivier Jacque. The Petronas Sprinta rider dominated from the first corner, opening up a 14 second lead over the rest of the field and showing determination, skill and concentration to hold his advantage all the way to the chequered flag. Honda rider Roberto Rolfo and Franco Battaini on the Aprilia made it three different constructors on the podium.

A brief, heavy shower midway through the race contributed to the downfall of Fonsi Nieto, who crashed on the 16th lap and saw his title hopes slip further out of his grasp. Marco Melandri took a careful fourth to increase his series lead to 45 points, whilst Toni Elias completed the top five ahead of Casey Stoner and Emilio Alzamora.
