Randy Mamola on the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix

It was a great race, with a lot of action. Checa made a huge mistake at the start, by not putting the bike in first gear and letting it in neutral. He was dead last off the line and it provided us the most exciting part race. Kenny Roberts Jr was leading from Rossi, while Biaggi was in third. Checa was coming through the field as we was the fastest. With six or seven laps to go, he finally got the lead ahead of Valentino Rossi, but unfortunately, he lost the front end and crashed out.

Everybody though it was going to be easy for Valentino Rossi after Tohru Ukawa crashed, but he still had to beat Max Biaggi, but he eventually secured the victory and the title in very difficult conditions.
