Manufacturers title safe for Aprilia

Manufacturers title safe for Aprilia

With four races still remaining of the 2002 season, Aprilia have already sealed the manufacturers´ crown. Third place for Franco Battaini at the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix last week was enough to seal the title for the Italian manufacturer for the ninth time in their history.

Aprilia have taken ten wins from twelve races in the quarter-litre class this season, seven of those thanks to Melandri with the remaining three the work of his title rival Fonsi Nieto. The Noale-based firm now have a 103 point advantage over Honda with only 100 left to play for, with the other contributor being Randy de Puniet, who finished as the highest Aprilia rider with second place at Suzuka.

Melandri has one hand on the individual title and, with Nieto his only realistic rival, it seems Aprilia could be celebrating a double success at the end of the season. Roberto Rolfo (Honda) and Sebastian Porto (Yamaha) still have an outside chance but would need a miracle to rescue their slim title hopes.
