Kato takes last gasp provisional pole with new record at Motegi

After two weeks of wet misery, Daijiro Kato got off to a great start in the glorious sunshine of Motegi today. The Japanese star broke the previous pole record by 0.8 seconds to take provisional pole, dislodging Max Biaggi from the top of the time sheets with his last lap effort.

Kato had dominated for much of the session and only conceded ground to the Italian Yamaha rider with six minutes remaining. Valentino Rossi also had a brief spell at the top but was unable to clock a final fast lap as he entered the pit with two minutes remaining and did not re-emerge in time. In the end the World Champion had to settle for third place behind Biaggi, with Carlos Checa making up the front row.

Loris Capirossi was the fastest two-stroke, qualifying in fourth place ahead of his team-mate Barros, who broke the radiator of his new RC211V with an off-track excursion which killed his chances of a front row attack. Roberts and Ukawa make up the second row, whilst Akira Yanagawa put the Kawasaki into fourteenth place on the provisional grid, around 2.5 seconds from pole.
