Melandri takes provisional pole as Aprilia dominate in Motegi

Marco Melandri was fastest in this afternoon´s first qualifying session for the quarter-litre class as Aprilia swept all four provisional front row positions. Toni Elias was second fastest behind the series leader, qualifying ahead of Randy De Puniet and Fonsi Nieto.

Elías, whose 125cc title hopes ended in the gravel trap here one year ago, led the way in the early of the session before De Puniet forced his way through at the halfway stage. The Spaniard recovered provisional pole but was replaced by Melandri for the remaining fifteen minutes of the session.

The surprise of the session was HRC wildcard Yuki Takahashi, who qualified ahead of factory team-mate Emilio Alzamora, the only man to have stepped onto the podium in each of the three occasions a Grand Prix has been held at this circuit. Franco Battaini and Roberto Locatelli complete the second row of the provisional grid.
