Pedrosa dominates first day in Motegi

Daniel Pedrosa dominated the first day of qualifying at Motegi on Friday, comfortably taking provisional pole position in the afternoon after topping the free practice time sheets in the morning.

Arnaud Vincent and Manuel Poggiali were the early pacesetters this afternoon, but as Pedrosa lifted the tempo and rose to top spot just eight minutes into the session, they were unable to match the young Honda rider. Vincent eventually finished third fastest, whilst Poggiali slipped all the way back to tenth.

The surprise of the session was Italian youngster Andrea Dovizioso, who qualified second fastest as his Honda got the better of the Aprilia machines of Vincent and Steve Jenkner. Hector Barberá had threatened the front row but crashed at the end of the session and had to settle for fifth place, joining Pablo Nieto, Gino Borsoi and Mirko Giansanti on the provisional second row.
