Toni Elias beats Marco Melandri to take debut win

Toni Elias took his first win in the quarter litre class in a last-lap thriller in Motegi. The Spaniard made his way to second place from a starting position of fifth ; in the late stages of the race, he closed on race leader Marco Melandri, posting impressive lap times. In the last lap, Elias got through twice, but Melandri managed to recover the lead in both occasions ; however the Spaniard didn´t give up and achieved his race winning move in the very last corner. Elias had taken three others podium finish before earning this first win in his rookie year.

Japanese youngster Yuki Takahashi brought the new Honda RS250, fresh out of the factory, to third. Fourth on the grid, the 18-year-old wildcard managed to run as high as second. Fonsi Nieto took the flag in fourth after battling with Emilio Alzamora, while Rolfo finished in fifth.

By finishing in second, Marco Melandri extends his Championship lead over Fonsi Nieto to 52 points. To secure the 250 title next weekend in Sepang, he´ll have to finish ahead of the Spaniard.
