Toni Elias builds on his front runner status

By taking his maiden win last weekend in Motegi, Toni Elias only confirmed his status of top rider in the quarter litre class. In Japan, the Manresa-born rider made his way to the second place before challenging Marco Melandri for the lead. In a fierce but fair last lap battle, the Spaniard got through in the very last corner to top the podium ahead of title hopeful Melandri.

Elias has previously shown signs of brilliance and this performance is no surprise. In his rookie year, he has already diced with the contenders for the title and proved to be very consistent. The young Telefonica Movistar Repsol rider scored in the last 10 races ; he took his first podium finish in Assen, where he took the flag in second behind Melandri, and finished third twice, in Donington and Brno. $$$ The likeable 20-year-old rider blossomed last year, when he was contesting his second season in the 125cc class. Under Alberto Puig´s guidance, he progressed throughout the season to become a serious contender for the title and eventually finished third overall behind Poggiali and Ui. After taking his first win in the 250cc class, he lies in fifth overall, but Porto only leads him by 2 points.
