Melandri on the brink of history

Melandri on the brink of history

Melandri on the brink of history

Melandri is on the verge of clinching his first world title in the 20 lap 250cc Gauloises Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Sunday, where victory would guarantee him status as the youngest ever quarter-litre World Champion. The 20 year old Italian Aprilia rider holds an impressive 52 point lead over Spaniard Fonsi Nieto in the title chase and has to leave Sepang on Sunday afternoon with a 50 point advantage to be crowned World Champion with two rounds remaining. Nieto was third in the race last year but knows he must win on Sunday to have a realistic chance of preventing Melandri from taking the title.

It´s a triumphant return home for the Malaysian-based Petronas Sprinta Yamaha TVK team of Sebastian Porto and Malaysian Shahrol Yuzy. $$$Porto brought the team both his and their first grand prix victory in Brazil three weeks ago and he currently lies fourth in the championship. Both Porto and his team-mate Shahrol Yuzy, riding in front of his home crowd, will be keen to impress this weekend.

Toni Elias took his first victory in the class at Motegi last weekend and is now just two points behind Porto in fifth place. He will be looking to apply the pressure on the Argentinean with just three rounds to go, with the final race of the season taking place in front of his army of fans at Valencia.
