Honda take provisional front row with Ukawa on pole

Tohru Ukawa set a new pole record at the Sepang circuit this afternoon as Honda took their first front row clean sweep of the season with the four-stroke RC211V machine. Valentino Rossi was second fastest ahead of Daijiro Kato, who crashed out of a fast lap as the session reached an interesting finale. Alex Barros, the winner of the last round at Motegi, took the final front row spot to complete the joy for the Japanese manufacturer.

Garry McCoy, who has finished on the podium for the last two seasons at this circuit, continued his good record as he clocked the fastest qualifying time by a two-stroke. The Australian heads the provisional second row from Max Biaggi, Loris Capirossi and Kenny Roberts, who just edged out Jeremy McWilliams. Capirossi crashed his NSR500 but was unhurt.

Andrew Pitt improved his time from this morning by 2.5 seconds but was unable to climb off the bottom of the time sheets as he remained 3.161 seconds slower than Jose Luis Cardoso.
