Pedrosa takes last gasp provisional pole from Poggiali

Daniel Pedrosa took provisional pole position in the first qualifying practice for the Gauloises Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, after snatching top spot from Manuel Poggiali in the dying moments of the session. The Spaniard, who lapped quicker than the pole record here in the free practice this morning, headed the time sheets after six minutes of the session but was dislodged ten minutes later by Arnaud Vincent.

Reigning World Champion Poggiali took over with eleven minutes remaining, gaining a second over his closest rivals before coming under pressure from Pedrosa. The youngster came within 0.082 seconds of the San Marino rider before bettering him with a new record pole lap of 2´14.275. Vincent was forced back to third place ahead of Steve Jenkner, who once again qualified on then provisional front row.

Pablo Nieto heads the second row in fifth place, with Lucio Cecchinello in eighth sandwiching two reformed riders in the shape of Klaus Nohles and Youichi Ui.
