Vincent fastest in high octane final qualifying

Arnaud Vincent took pole position for the Gauloises Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix by almost half a second in an incredibly fast final qualifying session. The Frenchman lapped in 2.13.563, more than a second under the pole record set by Toni Elias last year, whilst Manuel Poggiali and Dani Pedrosa both suffered uncharacteristic crashes when trying to maintain the pace.

Poggiali had just moved to the top of the time sheets when he crashed out of a second hot lap with eight minutes remaining, whilst Dani Pedrosa highsided his Honda when making a pole attack five minutes later. Poggiali returned to the track but was unable to match the flying Vincent and took second place ahead of Pedrosa, who headed straight for the mobile clinic. The final front row position was taken by Steve Jenkner.

Héctor Barberá charged to the head of the second row with a late effort whilst Youichi Ui appears to have found his way after an encouraging couple of days in practice. The Japanese rider lines up in sixth place ahead of Lucio Cecchinello and Max Sabbatani.
