Biaggi takes victory ahead of Rossi in Sepang

Max Biaggi clinched his second win of the season in Sepang despite Valentino Rossi´s late charge. In the early stages of the race, Barros - who started from pole position - was leading ahead of Kato, Ukawa, Rossi and Checa. The Spaniard lost ground on the front leaders and took the flag behind an impressive Shinya Nakano, who raced for the first time aboard the YZR-M1. From the fourth lap, Barros and Biaggi increased the gap over Rossi and Ukawa, while Kato was a lonely fifth.

By mid race, the Repsol Honda riders closed on Barros and Biaggi. Then, the Yamaha rider upped his pace and took the lead. With eight laps to go, Rossi was third and failed to pass Barros. As the two riders went wide, Ukawa got through to take second behind Biaggi.

Two laps later, Rossi, who was struggling with his bike, managed to demote Ukawa from second and began to close on Biaggi, who had a three second lead. The MotoGP World Champion kept pushing and cut the gap down to half a second on the finish line. Barros completed the podium, ahead of Ukawa and Kato.
