Fonsi back in title chase after winning in Sepang

Fonsi Nieto took victory in the quarter litre class and is back in the title chase after championship leader Marco Melandri retired from the Gauloises Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix with a mechanical failure. The Italian could have clinched the title in Malaysia, but dropped positions soon after the start and finally came back to the pits.

Aware that Melandri was out of the race, Fonsi lead home his team mate Toni Elias, who followed team orders and stayed tight in second, with a solid lead over Roberto Rolfo. A little further back, Porto, Battaini and de Puniet tussled for fourth, and the Argentinean finally crossed the line ahead of the Italian and the French rider.

Matsudo, who had lost ground on the three riders by the mid-race mark, took seventh ahead of Alzamora, Yuzy and Checa. With victory in Malaysia, Fonsi Nieto cuts Melandri´s lead down to 27 points with two races remaining.
