Valentino Rossi in the footsteps of Mick Doohan

Already crowned MotoGP World Champion, Valentino Rossi will try to reach a new record in Valencia, venue of the final Grand Prix of the 2002 season. The Italian rider could equal Mick Doohan´s record of 12 wins in one season. The five times World Champion Australian won twelve races in 1997, the year of his fourth title in the blue riband class.

Valentino Rossi has already won eleven out of fifteen races so far this year. Ukawa, Barros and Biaggi prevented him from taking victory in Welkom, Motegi and Sepang. In Brno, Rossi was forced to retire due to a rear tyre problem while he was fighting for the lead with Biaggi.

Doohan´s record is one win ahead of Giacomo Agostini, who topped the podium eleven times in 1972. Last year, Rossi equalled Ago´s statistic, as he took the 500cc crown with eleven wins.
