Loris Capirossi looking forward to his Ducati debut

The Gran Premio Marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana will signal the end of an era for Loris Capirossi, who makes his final appearance aboard the West Honda Pons NSR500 before riding the Ducati Desmosedici four-stroke for the first time three days later. The Italian heads for the Spanish venue from his Montecarlo residence later this week and he revealed his excitement at the prospect of turning a new page in his career as he spoke to to

`I am in good shape and looking forward to Valencia´, says the 29 year old. `The track should allow the two-strokes a decent chance to compete with the four-strokes. Hopefully the weather will stay fine and I will get the chance to finish my association with the NSR on a positive note´.

Capirossi starts a new era with Ducati in a two day test on the 6th and 7th November but he admits it will be a wrench to leave his old team. `I have been with West Honda Pons for the last three seasons and I think it would be difficult to find a better team. It is hard to leave because the relationship with everyone has been very good, but the Ducati project is very exciting and I think the challenge of developing the bike and making it competitive is huge. It will be tough at the start because I have no experience on a four-stroke but I am confident in my capacity to adapt and, above all, in the potential of the Desmosedici´.

The Italian is also looking forward to a new partnership with Australian Troy Bayliss. `He is a very talented rider and a good person,´ says the former 125 and 250 World Champion. `We will have to wait and see how things develop but hopefully by the halfway point of the 2003 season we will have a competitive bike. It will be a season of hard work and development which should put us in a position to fight for the title in 2004. This is my objective´.
