Marco Melandri maintains pole despite slower lap times

Newly-crowned World Champion Marco Melandri maintained pole position for the quarter-litre race despite failing to improve on his provisional qualifying time from yesterday. With the track conditions cooling in the setting Mediterranean sun, several riders struggled to lower their times, with Porto the first top ten mover after 18 minutes of the session had elapsed.

De Puniet stepped up his pace four minutes later and clocked the fastest lap of the day, although he could not quite dislodge Melandri despite lapping within 0.094 seconds of the Italian. The Frenchman will start from second place on the grid with Argentinean rider Porto in third. Emilio Alzamora qualified as the highest home rider as his provisional time proved enough to edge out compatriots Alex Debón and Fonsi Nieto for a front row spot in fourth place, whilst Rolfo took seventh place on the grid behind the Spanish twosome and ahead of Toni Elías.

Casey Stoner qualified in tenth place and starts from the third row behind Franco Battaini and ahead of David Checa and Roberto Locatelli.
