Melandri brings his campaign to a stylish end

The new 250cc World Champion, Marco Melandri, had a perfect week-end in Valencia, as he rode a lonely race to take his ninth win of the season. The Aprilia rider started the race from the pole position, and pushed hard very soon while his rivals had various fortunes. Argentinean Sebastian Porto was forced to retire on the first lap when he was in fourth. Then Toni Elias attempted to challenge Melandri for the lead, but a mechanical problem relegated him to tenth. His team-mate, Fonsi Nieto, upped his pace, trying to come back on the leader, but he eventually crashed out.

After the race, Melandri explained : ´Even without having a duel like the one at Phillip Island, today´s race was no walkover. It´s tough riding 27 laps on a track like this. I wanted to win this race at all costs: I wanted to bow out of the 250 class in the best possible way, and I´m very glad I made it´. With this win, Melandri equals italian fellows and former 250cc World Champion, Valentino Rossi and Max Biaggi, who also clinched nine wins, respectively in 1999 and 1996.
