Yamaha sign Barros and Melandri and unveil MotoGP plans

Yamaha has announced a two year deal with multinational tobacco company Altadis. The two leading brands of the group, Fortuna and Gauloises, will be represented in the MotoGP World Championship by the factory squad and the Tech3 outfit.

Spaniard Carlos Checa will be joined by 250cc World Champion Marco Melandri within the Fortuna Yamaha team. In the Gauloises Yamaha Tech3, Olivier Jacque will teamed up with Alex Barros. The french outfit will benefit from the full technical support of the factory.

Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, declared : ´Yamaha is very pleased to have cemented a relationship with Altadis. Altadis has been an excellent supporter of MotoGP over the last few years and is an innovative and exciting company. We are looking forward to a fruitful partnership. With both teams covered under this agreement we should be able to achieve Yamaha and Altadis's mutual objectives both on the racetracks and in the market place´.

The Director of the Fortuna Yamaha team, Davide Brivio, hopes Checa will be able to fight for the title while Melandri will make his first steps in the blue riband class : ´Carlos knows what he has to do next year. Yamaha has placed a lot of faith in him and we know that he's ready to show the balance of consistency and speed needed to fight for the Championship. It will be very interesting for all of us to work with Marco and help him to take the next step in his career. He has already achieved a lot at just 20 years of age and we'll provide him with the best possible environment to adapt quickly to the M1´.

The Gauloises Yamaha Tech3 team will benefit from Barros´ 4-stroke experience, as the Brazilian will ride alongside Olivier Jacque, 250cc World Champion in 2000 with Yamaha and Tech3. ´Alex Barros has been incredible this season and I am sure that he'll fit in well with our team and adapt quickly to the M1´ said Hervé Poncharal, manager and owner of Tech3. ´I think that Olivier too will adapt well to the bike with a full winter test programme and will be running up front where he belongs from the beginning of next season´.
