Daijiro Kato, first Rookie of the Year in the MotoGP class

Japanese rider Daijiro Kato was named Rookie of the Year in the blue riband class, after the last race of the season held last weekend in Valencia. It´s the second time the Honda rider takes the award, as he was also the 2000 Rookie of the Year in the 250cc class.

After an impressive 2001 campaign that saw him clinching his first World Champion title in the quarter litre class, Kato made his debut season aboard the Honda NSR500. In the second round of the season, in Welkom, he took fourth before having his first taste of podium in Jerez, as he took the flag in second position, behind Valentino Rossi. After this good start, Kato went on a dip of form before switching to the RC211V 4-stroke, in Brno. There, he took second behind Biaggi. He ended the season with two fourth, in Australia and Valencia, to take seventh in the final standings.
