Barberá, Faubel and Oliver take Spanish Championship titles

The final round of the CEV Fortuna 2002 (Spanish Championship) took place this weekend at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia, with three of the four titles in the series decided – two in favour of full time World Championship riders. Promising 125cc youngster Héctor Barberá consolidated his growing reputation by taking victory and the title after a thrilling late battle with Hungarian Grand Prix rival Gabor Talmacsi. His main rival for the title, Alvaro Bautista, was in the lead group until the mid-race stage but crashed out before remounting to finish fifth.

In the 250cc class Héctor Faubel also made it a double celebration with victory and the title after his closest rival and Grand Prix team-mate Raul Jara could only finish fourth. Eric Bataille and Alvaro Molina made up the podium. Daniel Oliver took the Fórmula Extreme title with third place behind Oriol Fernández and José Luis Cardoso. The disqualification of Sardá, who had finished seventh, clinched the honours for Oliver. In Supersport David de Gea took victory ahead of Javier del Amor and Oriol Fernández. Bernat Martínez had finished third but was handed a 20 second penalty which dropped him back to eighth.
