Emilio Alzamora signs with Derbi for 2003

Former 125cc World Champion Emilio Alzamora will return to the category in 2003 after signing a deal to ride with Derbi. The Spaniard will race alongside 15 year old compatriot Jorge Lorenzo and try to repeat the feats of Ángel Nieto and Jorge Martínez ´Aspar´, who spent the most successful years of their careers with the Spanish factory.

´We have been chasing Emilio Alzamora for months because he is a very exciting prospect for our team,´ said Derbi Racing General Manager Giampiero Sacchi. `At last we have reached an agreement and I am convinced that his experience and talent combined with the technical depth of our team will allow us to fight for the World Championship´.

Meanwhile, Alzamora is looking forward to the challenge of flying the flag for a local manufacturer. ´To be a Derbi rider is a real privilege,´ he says. `The `red bullets´ have a lot of prestige and have been ridden by the best Spanish riders in history. I am excited to be going back to 125cc and am looking forward to fighting for victory at every race and for the world title. To be successful with a factory from my home country would be a double satisfaction and I would love to contribute to that. From now on I am just thinking about getting on with testing and the hard work we have in front of us if we want to be competitive and have a chance of achieving our objectives. We are going to give everything - both myself and the magnificent team I will have around me – and we hope to be in peak conditions when the 2003 season starts at Suzuka´.

Alzamora finished seventh in the 250cc World Championship in 2002, matching his achievements from the previous season.
