Barbera looking for birthday boost at home GP

Hector Barberá returns home from his globetrotting adventures this weekend to contest the final round of the 125cc World Championship with a special birthday bonus in mind. The Spanish schoolboy turns 16 on Saturday but his coming of age has been a lot more gradual, as he has been transformed from a promising but precocious young talent to a podium contender under the careful guidance of Jorge Martínez Aspar.

`I suppose at the start of the season I didn´t expect things to go as well as they have,´ says Barbera. `I was pretty far back in the first few races and I struggled to get to grips with the bike and the competition. I think it was from Brno onwards that things changed. I finished fourth there and began to improve, and later finished fifth at Motegi. In general I was feeling more comfortable on the bike and I began to analyse my performances more. When I was at the front I knew why, and likewise when I was further back. This is important because I am very critical of myself. I could finish the season in the top 15 and this is very positive for me. Next season I hope to finish in the top five.´

Barberá, born just a few kilometres from the Ricardo Tormo circuit, is now looking forward to his first home Grand Prix and the support of a huge partisan crowd. `I would love to do well at Valencia. It is a circuit I know well and it would be great to make the podium in front of the home fans, although this will be difficult because there will be so many riders at the front, including my team-mate Pablo Nieto. In August we did some tests here and I was very close to the circuit record so I am optimistic.´
