CEV Fortuna closes with fresh success for Barbera and Bataille

World Championship riders Hector Barbera (Aprilia 125cc) and Eric Bataille (Honda 250cc) took victories in the final round of the CEV Fortuna (Spanish Championship) at Jerez this weekend. Barbera had already clinched the 125cc title but he battled hard from ninth place to take the win from fellow Grand Prix rookie Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) and David Bonache (Honda). Alvaro Bautista sealed second place in the championship for the Team Aprilia Atlético de Madrid after taking eighth place and seeing rival Fabrizio Lai only manage tenth. French rider Bataille passed Raúl Jara (Aprilia RFME) on the final corner to take his third win in the series this year, after the Spaniard had dominated from start to finish. Héctor Faubel (Aprilia, RFME) took the title in the penultimate round of the season at Valencia but added to his points score with third place, whilst the surprise performance of the day came from Finnish rider Ari Matikainen (Yamaha) who came fourth. Javier del Amor (Yamaha) took the only remaining CEV Fortuna 2002 title on offer in the Supersport class, with Daniel Olivier (Suzuki) having already sealed the honours in Formula Extreme. In the Formula Extreme race MotoGP rider José Luis Cardoso (Yamaha) crashed with Kenny Noyes (Honda) late in the race when challenging for third place, leaving Eduard Ullastres (Yamaha) to take a clear victory from Josep Sardà (Yamaha) and Idalio Gavira.
