Day of Champions takes centre-stage in MotoGP curtain call

The 2002 MotoGP season draws to a close at this weekend´s Gran Premio Marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana, with the Day of Champions event holding the paddock´s attention today, before the curtain is brought down on another fantastic year's racing. An ever-passionate crowd flocked to the usually out-of-bounds paddock early on in the day, while they were then treated to a whole host of attractions, all in benefit of the aid organisation Riders for Health and its Spanish sister organisation Motos Solidarias. All the monies raised over these two days of events, and throughout the weekend of racing here in Valencia will go to the Binga district of Zimbabwe to help reach those suffering in that area. $$$Although details of how much has been raised at today´s event will not be available until tomorrow, the paddock and it's surrounding areas were crammed with over 3,000 fans all wanting to catch a glimpse of their MotoGP heroes, while doing their bit for a good cause in the process. They were entertained by stunt-shows, riders´ scooter shootout, autograph sessions, pit-lane walks and specially purchased two-seat rides around the circuit itself with ex-riders Randy Mamola and Jorge Martinez Aspar. There was also another of the now-legendary memorabilia auctions, which saw riders donating leathers, helmets, gloves and other kit for fans to purchase their own piece of MotoGP.
