Casey Stoner evaluates his first laps aboard the Aprilia 125

Casey Stoner completed his first few kilometres aboard the Aprilia machine which he will ride in this year´s 125cc World Championship at private tests in Spain last weekend. The Australian teenager remains in the squad run by fellow rider Lucio Cechinello, but drops down from the 250 class where he spent his rookie season in 2002, and he is happy to be making the switch.

´The tests in Jerez at the weekend went really well and it didn´t take long to get some fast laps in once I had the bike set to my riding position,´ said Stoner, who was a revelation during his first full season at Grand Prix level. `We got the set-up sorted out very quickly and Lucio helped me loads. Experience on any bike is useful, but last year in 250 will not really be that useful. I will have to try and forget quite a lot of the things I was doing on that bike and think about how to ride a 125. For example the speed through the corner is much higher and requires a different style of braking and acceleration, both in terms of distances and intensity ´.

Stoner has now returned to his home country for three weeks before the next set of tests in Europe, and he will have plenty of time to plan his assault on the minor category. ´Without doubt I think I can race at the front, but I am also aware that to fight for the title would be extremely difficult because there are some top riders out there on top machinery. One of my objectives for the season is to take my first ever Grand Prix victory´.
