Franco Battaini steps up preparations for Campetella debut

Franco Battaini is currently well underway with his physical preparation programme and itching to make his debut with the Campetella Racing team. The Italian is without doubt one of the fittest riders in the paddock, and he is currently preparing to compete in a triathlon in his home town of Brescia before hitting the track next month.

`I will be competing on the 9th March so I am training every day, running, swimming and cycling,´ explains Battaini. `Everybody knows how much I love sport, so this sort of exercise is not a sacrifice for me. It is an excellent way to get in shape for the first tests with my new team, which should be on the 5th and 6th February in Valencia. I have not ridden a race bike since last season so I am really looking forward to starting this new chapter in my career´.

The end of the 2002 season proved to be a difficult time for Battaini, who was unsure of his future in the series, but he revealed that the winter holidays gave him the chance to rethink his strategy. `During the season we are constantly travelling and it is hard at times, so I spent time with my family over the holiday period and relaxed. I was talking to my team but they were concentrating on 125 and then the Campetella offer came up. I will be on an Aprilia kit and I hope to be at the front again, although I know it won´t be easy. It looks like Poggiali is already going well on his new bike and Elías will have more experience on the 250 this year. I have lots of experience too, but sometimes extra horsepower is more helpful!´
