First IRTA test of 2003 brings the 125 teams to Jerez

The first IRTA gathering for the riders and teams of the 2003 125cc World Championship occurs this Wednesday (19th) and will carry on into Thursday before the 250s and MotoGP categories take control of the track for the remainder of the calendar week in southern Spain.

It will be the first occasion the new line-ups and personnel of the 125 series will be able to get a look at their competitors for the upcoming campaign. Sadly notable absentees will be the new KTM pairing of defending World Champion Arnaud Vincent and former number one Roberto Locatelli. The Austrian firm, that forged a successful and powerful reputation in the off-road world, is taking more time over preparations for their first road racing project . Riders Julian Simon and Fabrizio Lai form the new Semprucci team fielding Malaguti machinery. Heading the provisional entry list in Jerez is exciting Spanish youngster and Honda´s top rider Daniel Pedrosa. While Masao Azuma, a GP winner in 2002 also rides for the Japanese manufacturer as part of his new Finnish AJO Motorsport team, with Mika Kallio his team-mate also in attendance. Aprilia have a host of talent on show in Spain including Lucio Cecchinello, Mirko Giansanti, Alex De Angelis, German Steve Jenkner and Japan´s Youichi Ui.
Spearheading Derbi's efforts for 2003 will be Emilio Alzamora, making his comeback to the classification where he won the title in 1999, and fellow Spaniard teenager Jorge Lorenzo. Like Alzamora, Australian Casey Stoner has also moved down from the 250s and is now team-mate to Cecchinello for Aprilia. Britain is represented by Chris Martin on an Aprilia and Leon Camier riding a Honda. Italian Stefano Bianco wears the Gilera colours.
