Jerez day one: Poggiali quickest from De Puniet and Elias

Riders from the 250cc class joined the MotoGP machines on track this weekend, and already have their own intriguing battles forming, even at this early stage. Ex-125cc World Champion Manuel Poggiali, who has only recently moved up to the category to ride an official Aprilia, is already setting the pace among the quarter-litres.

The San Marino youngster was fastest today in a time of 1'45.517 ahead of Randy de Puniet, Toni Elias (pictured), a returning Anthony West and Franco Battaini. The latter of these was on of the few crashers today, but came off worse than any other rider as he broke his foot in three places. Other riders to crash included Chaz Davies and Sylvain Guintoli, but both are fine after their accidents.

$$$ The IRTA tests continue tomorrow and Sunday for the MotoGP and 250cc bikes.
