Troy Bayliss this week completed the latest phase of testing for the all-new prototype Ducati Desmosedici at the IRTA tests in Estoril, and admitted that he is already feeling at home in the MotoGP paddock before the season has even begun. No doubt the Australian´s lap times are helping him to settle in, with his Marlboro Ducati just over a second off pole record time at the Portuguese track on Thursday, and the former World Superbike Champion explained his progress to motograndprix.com.

`Basically since the private tests we conducted at Phillip Island everything has been going great,´ smiled Bayliss. `Sepang went well and then we made good progress at Jerez. It´s been good to test alongside the other bikes to see where we´re standing and I think we´re quite comfortable at the moment. I´m with the same guys I have been with for the last couple of years so that is a help and I feel ready to go racing.´

Bayliss makes the switch to the elite category after becoming accustomed to dominating the WSB series alongside fellow rookie Colin Edwards in recent years, but revealed that he is already enjoying the atmosphere in the MotoGP paddock and rapidly getting used to the new circuits. `I am feeling comfortable being a part of MotoGP – I feel really good already. I am happy lapping at Jerez now and Sepang wasn´t too big a problem. On Wednesday I made a few laps in the rain at Estoril and it was nice. It is strange the way a lot of our recent tests have been plagued by bad weather but we had decent conditions on Thursday afternoon and I think everything is going in the right direction. I could only complete a few proper laps really but I really enjoyed the place.´

It is still early days to be setting targets but Bayliss is confident that MotoGP´s latest factory addition can meet their principal objective for their first season in the championship. `We want to be competitive and already I think we´re showing that we are. We´ve certainly got a big job at hand but it´s coming together and I think we´re going to have quite a good year – hopefully we can surprise a few people.
