Honda pack up at Mugello as Aprilia opt for an extra day

The sun shone at Mugello today to allow Camel Pramac Honda, Telefónica Movistar Honda and Alice Aprilia Racing teams a full day of dry testing at the Italian circuit. Although the temperatures remained quite low, with a maximum of 14º C, the track was in perfect conditions and Tohru Ukawa made the most of the session to clock the fastest time, later hailing the impressive 2003 version RC211V.

`The new bike is going really well´, commented Ukawa. `I would say that the progress with respect to last year´s bike is noticeable, particularly on the brakes, where the bike is much more stable.´

Team-mate Max Biaggi ended the day two tenths slower than Ukawa after finishing an hour earlier. `I was able to lap all day today, just as I had hoped,´ said the Italian. `I finished an hour early because to be honest we had tested everything we had planned, tyres and suspension settings, by 5pm. It was cold so there was no point going back out there on soft tyres in conditions completely different to what we can expect for the GP. Now, with the support of Sito and the team I hope to get some new material for the next test´. $$$

World Superbike Champion Colin Edwards was less satisfied at the end of the session. The American has taken longer than he expected to adapt to the fast Mugello track and Aprilia decided to extend the test for another day as Honda packed up to leave. `I was able to get a lot of laps in today but, sincerely, I can´t say I know the track well yet. Lap after lap, just when I thought I had the references to tackle a corner well, I realised that wasn´t the case. I was braking too early or too late and I wasn´t able to go fast, so we decided to stay an extra day, which can only be a positive thing. In fact, as well as me getting used to the circuit, we still have a lot of work to do on the bike´.

Unofficial lap times

Tohru Ukawa 1:52.1
Max Biaggi 1:52.3
Sete Gibernau 1:52.3
Noriyuki Haga 1:52.6
Daijiro Kato 1:53.0
Colin Edwards 1:53.6
