LCR make official presentation in Rimini

The Safilo Oxydo backed Aprilia team run by Grand Prix veteran Lucio Cecchinello was officially unveiled at a ceremony in Rimini at the weekend. Cecchinello, who made his World Championship debut in 1993, has been running his own team since 1996 and this year will run factory machines in both the 250 and 125 classes. Promising Frenchman Randy De Puniet, supported by reserve rider David Checa, will spearhead the team´s effort in the quarter-litre class, whilst Australian teenager Casey Stoner will partner the Italian in 125.

Cecchinello revealed the motivation behind his decision to resist retirement, and the belief he has in his two young apprentices. `The feeling of being amongst the top riders in the world, many years of hard work, five podiums with three victories in 2002 and a lot of passion gave me the energy to keep on competing in the world championship,´ explained the 33 year old. `I know that everybody wants to know when I will take the decision to stop my riding career. I have only one thing to tell you all: I want to win my championship!! Casey is one of the young talents of the world championship and I feel very proud to be his teacher. Moreover I believe we will make a great job with Randy in the 250cc class´.

De Puniet, who finished ninth in the 2002 series, added: `It is a dream that becomes reality! This year I will ride for a top team with a factory bike and I want to thank Aprilia, Lucio and his sponsors. The official test we made at Jerez and Estoril have been very positive, making me confident for the beginning of the championship. The staff are very professional and Lucio does not neglect anything´.

Safilo Group, a world leader in the production of optical eyewear and sunglasses, is present on the world market with own-brand collections (Safilo, Oxydo, Carrera, Blue Bay Smith) and other brands which it produces under license (Gucci, Christian Dior, Polo Ralph Lauren, Diesel, Valentino, Oliver, Max Mara, Burberry, Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Stella McCartney, Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani), and has been involved in MotoGP for three years.
