Toni Elías gives himself birthday boost in Mugello

Toni Elías reaped the harvest of a long and intense winter of development on the set-up of the all-new Aprilia RSW with a flying send-off lap at Mugello yesterday. Before packing up the bikes and equipment for transportation to Japan, the Spaniard, who celebrates his 20th birthday today, stormed to a best time of 1´53.1, eight tenths quicker than the pole record set by Tetsuya Harada in 2001. The circuit lap record was set by Shinya Nakano in 2000, who clocked a 1´54.462 on his way to victory. Meanwhile Elias´ team-mate Fonsi Nieto improved on his effort from Monday with a best lap of 1´55.5, whilst the dominant force in preseason testing, Manuel Poggiali, crashed but escaped uninjured .

`I am very happy with the times we set at Mugello,´ said Elías. `After a lot of hard work we have found a good set-up with the bike. Over the last two days we have also found time to work specifically towards the races, including set-up and lapping with a full tank. The truth is I did not expect to go so fast, but the most important thing is that these times are proof that the work we are doing is correct and we are on the right path´.
