Cold and damp conditions hand pole to De Angelis

The provisional grid for the 125cc SKYY VODKA Grand Prix of Japan remained intact today as cool and damp conditions prevented any of the riders from improving their best times from Friday. Alex De Angelis will start the race from pole position, although the fastest man in this afternoon´s session was Grand Prix rookie Fabrizio Lai, riding the brand new Malaguti. Lai´s best time of 2´23.586 was still eight seconds slower than De Angelis´ best effort yesterday, when the riders enjoyed mainly dry conditions until the clouds burst with around ten minutes remaining of the session.

Whilst De Angelis starts from pole, uncertainty over the weather conditions adds an air of unpredictability to tomorrow´s race and one man to watch could be young Australian Casey Stoner. Stoner starts from the second row but has been the most consistent rider in all conditions, setting the second fastest time in the wet FP2 behind Gabor Talmacsi this morning and then lapping third fastest behind Lai and Stefano Perugini in mixed conditions this afternoon.

Dani Pedrosa was one of fourteen riders who failed to even lap within qualification time today but he maintains his front row slot alongside De Angelis, Lucio Cecchinello and Mirko Giansanti. Perugini heads the second row from Max Sabbatani, Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso.
