Poggiali in sensational 250 debut victory

Factory Aprilia rider Manuel Poggiali completed a quite perfect 250 debut race by recovering from a starting position of 23rd to win the Skyy Vodka Grand Prix of Japan at a sunny but temperate Suzuka circuit.

It was a quite brilliant ride by the former 125 World Champion. He passed a leading group that consisted of Ant West, Sebastien Porto and two Japanese wild-cards Hiroshi Aoyama and Yuki Takahashi. West, quite surprisingly fighting for the podium, ruled himself out late into the race after losing the front end of the bike in the first section of curves and crashing into the gravel. Porto was leading by 5 seconds at one stage until he was chased down by first West and then Poggiali. The Argentine went on to collect fourth after the scrabbling Honda of Aoyama and Takahashi completed the top three respectively.
Fonsi Nieto, one of the favourites for the title this season had to be content with a subdued sixth position while his team-mate Toni Elias was forced to retire mid-way through the race after the young Spanish star cut his way into the top ten from the very back of the grid. Honda's Roberto Rolfo made a mistake on the spoon curve on the final lap, which dropped him out of the leading positions and he went on to take seventh behind Nieto.
