De Gea to take second WCM seat in South Africa

Former 250cc World Championship rider David De Gea has been confirmed as the second rider for the WCM team, starting from the next race at Welkom in South Africa on April 27. Team boss Peter Clifford revealed to motograndprix.com that the Spanish rider, who has not contested a Grand Prix since the end of 2001, will partner Chris Burns for the rest of the season.

De Gea made his Grand Prix debut as a 125cc wildcard at Catalunya and made further sporadic appearances in 250 before contesting the second half of 1999 and the whole of 2000 with the 500cc Luis d´Antin Antena 3 outfit. He returned to the quarter-litre class with the same team in 2001 and took his first podium finish in a wet and dry race won by Jeremy McWilliams at Assen.
