Johan Stigefelt gives his impressions at the start of another racing year

Johan Stigefelt is back in the World Championships and the 250 class. The likeable Swedish rider is racing this season with the Italian Abruzzo Aprilia set-up that guided Valentino Rossi and Loris Capirossi to glory some years ago. After a few years struggling on less than competitive machinery the 26 year old now seems in capable hands and has teamed up with Antony West.

The latter shone in the first GP round in Japan two weeks ago before his untimely crash and ´Stiggy´ had his own problems managing only to take 14th. According to his new website Stigefelt had a tough but effective pre-season after a year's break from racing and having to adapt to the 250 that he last rode in 2000. The Barcelona resident prepared for his new campaign by training in the gym, running and riding motocross.

In Suzuka he suffered an engine problem during warm-up on Sunday, which meant he had to revert to his spare bike. After a nudge in the opening turn he was fighting his way back from 20th but struggling with the settings and experiencing a lot of chatter with his cornering. A duel with Joan Olive for 13th was lost on the final chicane and the Swede had to be content with only 2 points from his GP comeback but promising better things for round two at South African in just two weeks time.
