McCoy realistic despite Welkom memories

McCoy realistic despite Welkom memories

After two weeks in the Queensland sunshine testing jet-skis with Kawasaki team-mate Andrew Pitt, Garry McCoy arrived in South Africa this week only too aware that he has little chance of repeating his most famous moment at the Phakisa Freeway. The Australian, who celebrated his 31st birthday last weekend, took an unforgettable first 500cc victory here at the start of the 2000 season on the Red Bull Yamaha but admits that after a disappointing sixteenth place at Suzuka in round one, the team have more practical targets for this weekend.

`We had a long meeting with the Japanese engineers after the Suzuka race, and I am very confident that we can improve on our results and start taking world championship points from the South African Grand Prix on,´ says McCoy. `I obviously have good memories of this track and my surprise victory three years ago, and I think that the layout of the Phakisa Raceway will help us a little bit. It´s basic flat layout without too many turns isn´t too hard on the chassis and we should stand more of a chance with the handling of the bike. But of course, I´m not thinking of a repeat victory in Welkom - it is very early in the season, and there are many development steps still to come before we will be able to do really well!´
