Ui announces return to form with pole record at Welkom

Youichi Ui today launched a 125cc World Championship revival with a stunning new pole position record on the first day of action at the Phakisa Freeway. The Japanese rider made the most of glorious sunshine and a fresh new asphalt surface at the Welkom track to clock a lap of 1´41.570, almost half a second quicker than his own previous record here of 1´42.059, set at the start of the 2001 season when the Japanese rider challenged Manuel Poggiali for the title until the final race at Rio. It was a particularly significant achievement for Ui, who earlier this week mourned the death of his great friend Daijiro Kato and wore the late Honda star´s famous number 74 on the fairing of his Aprilia.

Ui dominated the top of the time sheets in the latter stages of the session, with only Spanish pair Dani Pedrosa and Pablo Nieto able to get close. Pedrosa took second place on the provisional grid ahead of Nieto, with impressive Italian youngster Andrea Dovizioso completing the front row after setting the quickest time in this morning´s free practice session.
